Defense of home and family is one of the first and foremost reasons why weapons of almost every sort, certainly including hand-held firearms, were invented in the first place. Almost any gun you can think of performs this primary function well, but some are a little better suited to the job than others.

As a home defense gun, a properly set up AR-15 is easier to shoot accurately and delivers more firepower than a handgun, is more precise than a shotgun, more controllable than a subgun, and is easily configured with lights, lasers and other accessories to give you further advantages over any uninvited guests who may come calling after visiting hours.

There are those who cite a certain “intimidation factor” as an additional benefit of an AR over a handgun, especially an AR equipped with a laser sighting device. Those people watch too much television. As a general rule, anybody who is dumb enough to get caught stumbling around somebody else’s house in the dark can not be counted on to have brains enough to distinguish an AR-15 from an economy-size can of spray-on insect repellent, or to tell the difference between a trembling laser beam and a spinning disco ball. Even if your personal perp is smarter and more mentally alert than that, the fact remains that, while nobody has ever been killed by a well placed shot of intimidation, relying on squishy psychological threats instead of bullets has often had a fatal effect on the naive practitioner.

A laser sight may enhance your ability to aim in low light, as tritium inserts in your iron sights definitely will. Unmagnified red-dot sights can be useful with practice. Unless you are completely suicidal, please remember to detach any long-range scope you might have on your AR before you even think about putting it in a place where somebody might be tempted to use it to defend your home from an invader lurking a few feet away. One accessory you must have on your home-defense AR is a bright white light for target identification. One of these lights mounted on your rail system can disorient and maybe even temporarily blind the bad guy but this is a secondary benefit to the primary one, which is knowing who it is (and who it is not) you’re about to shoot.

One more reminder that seems superfluous but apparently needs to be mentioned is that an AR-15 is a rifle, not a room deodorizer. Wield it from the shoulder, not the hip, use your sights, and fire one well aimed round at a time.

SAFETY ISSUES

Defending your home from robbers, thieves, invaders and assorted nut cases does not mean you have to shoot up your neighborhood. Bullets that whiz through walls almost always create more problems than they solve, and whizzing through walls is one of the things a full-metal-jacket .223 bullet does best. It’s called overpenetration, and there are various ways to alleviate it so your neighbors don’t start shooting back.

A .223 bullet that mushrooms to twice its size and skids to a halt inside the suddenly expanded chest of your uninvited guest is far preferable to one that passes out the back of his MTV T-shirt right through the framed Home-Sweet-Home embroidery hanging on the wall behind him into your grandmother’s TV set. The latter is what you can expect from military-type .223 ammo, the former is the way good hunting hollowpoints and rapidly expanding varmint loads are supposed to behave. If your bullet will transform a prairie dog into a spray of pink mist, it will do much the same to your guest’s heart and lungs without interrupting your grandmother’s favorite soap opera. Another safe bet is pre-fragmented “frangible” bullets, so fragile in construction they’re designed to break up into tiny pieces when they encounter anything harder than a wisdom tooth.

Your home may be your castle, but it’s sure not built like one. Half an inch of drywall with a not-quite 2X4 here and there just isn’t the same as twelve feet of solid stone. Even those old castles didn’t have to withstand anything more penetrating than an occasional arrow, rock or sharp stick.

Besides loading varmint bullets in your .223, another good way to defend your home is with larger-caliber bullets that are, relatively speaking, soft, fat and slow. Your grandmother will be happy to know there are many upper receivers made specifically for your AR that provide just such an ideal defense.

Handgun cartridges loaded with personal defense hollowpoints or frangibles work better in your home AR-15 than they do in your pistol. Uppers are available in 9mm, .40 Auto, .45 ACP and 10mm. Smallbore high-velocity cartridges similar to the .223 - the 6x45mm and 6mm PPC - can be used for home defense with lightweight varmint bullets. Lower-velocity rounds with heavier bullets work even better - 7.62x39 Soviet, 6.8x43 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .300 Fireball/Whisper, and .338 Spectre. Best of all are the big-bore .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf, which provide plenty of “knock-down” power and limited penetration when loaded with heavy hollowpoint or softpoint bullets.

Whichever cartridge you choose, you’ll soon see why the short, handy AR-15 carbine, complete with rail-mounted light and perhaps laser and/or red dot sight, is the primary weapon-of-choice used by military units preparing for close quarters battle (CQB) and police SWAT units faced with operating in a hostile home environment. The requirements of these highly trained shooters are quite similar to your own as a home defender operating in cramped space with innocents to consider, and you can learn from their tactics as well as their equipment. The best way to learn is to go to school and practice a lot.

Eric Feldman, a former inspector general of the National Reconnaissance Office, the super-secret agency that oversees U.S. spy satellites, expressed concern that relying on workers to report colleagues’ suspicious behaviors to security officials could create “a repressive kind of culture.”

“The answer to it is not to have a Stasi-like response,” said Feldman, referring to the feared secret police of communist East Germany. “You’ve removed that firewall between employees seeking help and the threat that any employee who seeks help could be immediately retaliated against by this insider threat office.”

Red, White and Blue Ice Pops Recipe

Ingredients

Strawberry Layer:
3/4 cup halved, hulled strawberries
1 tablespoon superfine sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Yogurt Layer:
3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt (not reduced-fat or fat-free)
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons lemon juice

Blueberry Layer:
3/4 cup blueberries
1 – 2 tablespoons superfine sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Directions

To make the strawberry layer, combine the strawberries and sugar in a medium bowl. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is syrupy and completely dissolved, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a food processor with the lemon juice and pulse until smooth. Evenly divide the mixture into six (3-ounce) ice pop molds; freeze until almost firm, about 40 minutes.

To make the yogurt layer, whisk together the yogurt, honey, and lemon juice in a small bowl. Remove the molds from the freezer and evenly top with the yogurt mixture, filling each 1/3 of the way. Freeze until almost firm, about 30 minutes.

To make the blueberry layer, combine the blueberries and sugar in a medium bowl. Let stand, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is syrupy and completely dissolved, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a food processor with the lemon juice and pulse until smooth. Remove the molds from the freezer. If using ice pop sticks, insert them through the yogurt layer. Top evenly with the with the blueberry mixture, leaving 1/4-inch of free space at the top. If using mold covers, top the yogurt evenly with the blueberry mixture, top with the mold covers, and freeze until frozen, about 6 hours or overnight.

To serve, dip the bottom of each mold in hot water to loosen, about 10 seconds. Remove pops from the molds. Serve at once.

Ingredients

Original recipe makes 150 crackers

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 pinch salt

1 1/2 teaspoons red pepper flakes

1 pound Cheddar cheese, grated and room temperature

1 cup unsalted butter, melted

2 cups crispy rice cereal (such as Rice Krispies)

Directions

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).

Combine flour, salt, and red pepper flakes in large bowl;add Cheddar cheese.

Toss until cheese is coated. Pour in melted butter; stir until mixture is moist and crumbly.

Add rice cereal and knead by hand until dough is well blended.

Roll dough into small 1/2-inch balls; arrange on a baking sheet. Flatten each ball with a fork.

Bake in the preheated oven until light and crispy, about 30 minutes.

An unsettling report prepared by the Emergencies Ministry (EMERCOM) circulating in the Kremlin today on the just completed talks between Russia and the United States in Washington D.C. says that the Obama regime has requested at least 15,000 Russian troops trained in disaster relief and "crowd functions" [i.e. riot control] be pre-positioned to respond to FEMA Region III during an unspecified "upcoming" disaster.

According to this report, this unprecedented request was made directly to Minister Vladimir Puchkov by US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Director Janet Napolitano who said these Russian troops would work "directly and jointly" with her Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of whose mission is to secure the continuity of the US government in the event of natural disasters or war.

Important to note, this report says, is that FEMA Region III, the area Russian troops are being requested for, includes Washington D.C. and the surrounding States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, "strongly suggesting" that the Obama regime has lost confidence in its own military being able to secure its survival should it be called upon to do so.

In his public statements, yesterday, regarding these matters Minister Puchkov stated, "We have decided that the US Federal Emergency Management Agency and Russia's Emergencies Ministry will work together to develop systems to protect people and territory from cosmic impacts," and further noted that his meeting with DHS Director Napolitano also covered other kinds of natural emergencies, such as recent years' extreme weather in both Russia and United States.

Ingredients

6 large green bell peppers
2 cups cooked wild rice
1 1/2 pounds ground chuck
2 cups chicken stock
1 (16 oz.) can diced tomatoes
1 medium onion, chopped
1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
¼ cup chopped walnuts
1 large egg
Salt and pepper to taste
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Directions

In a large mixing bowl combine ground beef, cooked wild rice, ½ of the can of chopped tomatoes, onion, cheese, egg, walnuts, red pepper flakes, nutmeg, salt and pepper. Mix well. Cut just the tops off of the green peppers and remove seeds and ribs from inside. Stuff with ground beef mixture. Place stuffed peppers stuffed side up in a slow cooker and pour stock and remaining tomatoes over. Cover and cook on HIGH for 5-6 hours or on LOW for 8-9 hours.

Retirees are likely to get smaller monthly payments using this new measure of inflation.

In his 2014 budget, President Obama proposes changing the measure of inflation used to calculate annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustments from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI) to the chained CPI beginning in 2015. This change would modestly improve the Social Security system's finances, but result in retirees getting slightly smaller annual increases in their Social Security checks. Here's a look at how your Social Security payments will change if the chained CPI is used to calculate future Social Security payment increases:

Lower benefits over time.

The chained CPI has grown more slowly than the traditional CPI by an average of about 0.25 percentage points over the past decade. If the chained CPI were implemented, Social Security benefits would be about $3 per month lower in 2014, and about $30 a month lower by 2023, according to Congressional Budget Office calculations. And by 2033, Social Security payments are projected to be 3 percent lower than they would be using the current measure of inflation. "For Social Security, that policy change would not alter the size of people's benefits when they are first eligible, either now or in the future, but it would reduce their benefits in subsequent years because of the reduction in the average cost-of-living adjustment," says Jeffrey Kling, associate director for economic analysis at the Congressional Budget Office. "The impact would be greater the longer people received benefits, that is, the more reduced cost-of-living adjustments they experienced."

Compounding cuts

The impact of the slower-growing measure of inflation would increase over time. For example, a worker who claimed retirement benefits at age 62 would, on average, get a 0.25 percent smaller payment at age 63 if the chained CPI were used instead of the current measure of inflation. After 10 years of Social Security payments and cost-of-living adjustments, this 73-year-old retiree would get 2.5 percent less, on average, than under current law. And at 93, this person would get an average of 7.2 percent less in Social Security payments over his or her lifetime. "Where the index was used to inflate a benefit or payment level, such as with Social Security, all program participants would receive a lower benefit than they would under current law," says Kling. "The impact would be especially large for some disabled beneficiaries; they generally become eligible for Social Security benefits before age 62 and thus can receive cost-of-living adjustments for a longer period."

Rationale for the switch.

The CPI estimates the annual change in the cost of living by calculating the adjustment in prices consumers pay for a basket of goods and services in urban areas of the U.S. The chained CPI measures inflation differently in a way that takes into account the idea that people might change their spending patterns when prices for specific items rise. "The chained CPI-U represents the latest stage in the development of our cost-of-living measures and improves on the CPI-U by accounting for how consumers substitute among goods when the price changes of those goods vary," says Erica Groshen, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). For example, a worker who typically spends $80 per week on gasoline and experiences a 10 percent increase in gas prices has seen their current cost-of-living increase by $8 per week. But that consumer could also decide to cut back on driving and ride the bus occasionally. "The consumer would be deciding if she would be better off by shifting her spending pattern than by spending the entire $8 on gasoline," says Groshen. "Put another way, the cost of keeping her standard of living constant has gone up by something less than $8 per week." Due largely to this substitution affect, "this formula generally shows a lower rate of inflation," says Groshen. Between December 1999 and December 2011, the CPI grew at an average annual rate of 2.5 percent, compared with 2.2 percent for the chained CPI.

Lengthy calculations

Social Security's cost-of-living adjustment is currently calculated by comparing the third-quarter average CPI to the measurement from a year earlier, and the cost-of-living adjustment based on the percent increase (if there is one) becomes payable in January. The chained CPI takes considerably longer to calculate, and the values are revised over a period of several years. To produce a January cost-of-living adjustment, an estimate of the chained CPI would need to be used, which could contain errors. "One shortcoming of the chained CPI is that it requires data which is not fully available for two years, and so the BLS publishes the chained CPI in initial and interim forms before publishing in final form with a time lag," says Ed Lorenzen, senior advisor for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. The chained CPI may also underestimate the inflation senior citizens experience, perhaps because health care prices play a larger role in older people's spending. "On average, seniors spend a higher percentage of their incomes on health care than workers or the general population, and health care costs have grown, and are projected to continue to grow, at a faster rate than other goods and services," says Nancy Altman, co-chair of the Strengthen Social Security Coalition.

Congress would need to pass and President Obama must sign a bill legislating the change.

If the 1200-plus page monstrosity that is the Immigration “Reform” bill passes Congress, full-time American workers can start kissing their jobs goodbye. Why? Because when you add the disastrous immigration bill to the obscene ObamaCare bill, you end up with a legal situation in which it’s cheaper for businesses to hire formerly illegal immigrants than to keep their legal workforce. This horrible unintended (or maybe intended?) consequence arises because formerly illegal immigrants who are legalized under the new bill will not be eligible for ObamaCare.

You see, under Obamacare, when an employer has a workforce that is eligible for ObamaCare, the employer had three choices, one of which is bad for the employer and two of which are bad for the worker: the employer can either pay the vastly inflated costs to keep employees insured; or pay a lower, but still significant penalty (about $3,000 per employee) if the employer stops providing insurance; or reduce the entire workforce to part-time status.

With the new immigration bill, the employer has a fourth choice: hire ex-illegals who are not covered by ObamaCare. Hiring them means that the employer doesn’t have to pay for high insurance, pay ObamaCare penalties, or go to a part-time workforce. Assuming there are qualified ex-illegal people for the job, it’s a total win for the employer – and a total lose for American workers.

Beginning in January, businesses with 50 or more full-time employees, that do not currently offer healthcare benefits that are considered “acceptable” by the Obama administration, must pay a penalty if at least one of their workers obtains insurance on a new government-run “exchange.” The penalty can be as much as $3,000 per employee.

Many employers have been preparing to cope with the new regulations by slashing the hours of full-timers to part-time status. Since “full-time,” in the language of ObamaCare, is averaging 30 hours per week, employers will, in general, receive the penalty if they have 50 or more employees who are working an average of 30 hours per week.
