WARRIOR, AL (WBRC) -

The victims of a home break-in near Warrior caught the alleged intruders on Sunday afternoon and held them at gunpoint until authorities could arrive.

A home surveillance system captured video of the suspects breaking into the Wyatt family home on Gobbler Knob Road on Friday afternoon.

The surveillance video shows a woman knocking on the family's home.

When no one answered, a male accomplice kicked the door open. The woman and two men helped themselves to two TVs and several of the family's Christmas presents, including gifts for their 1-year old-son.

The three suspects then drove away in a black Ford Ranger pickup truck.

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Wyatts' home around 9:30 p.m. Friday to investigate the burglary.

Two days later, around 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, deputies investigated a second burglary, this one in the 1600 block of New Bethel School Road.

The victim said someone forced open the door to his home and stole a computer monitor, trumpet, knife collection and jewelry, according to Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

While deputies were still on the scene investigating the second burglary, the Wyatts called the sheriff's office to say they had found the suspects who broke into their home and were holding them at gunpoint.

Sarah Wyatt said that by chance, her husband Chris and other relatives recognized the suspects and apprehended them on Sunday afternoon.

"They happened to drive by and we seen them drive by and we knew it was them and we stopped them,” Chris Wyatt said.

The sheriff's office says Wyatt followed the suspects' vehicle as they turned down Gobbler's Knob Mine Road and blocked them in. He and his friends then held them at gunpoint until deputies could get to the scene, Christian said.

Chris Wyatt said the suspects claimed they were lost when the Wyatts confronted them.

"They tried to say that they were lost and we corrected them where they were,” Chris Wyatt said.

Deputies arrived a short time later and took a man and two women into custody. They also found some of the stolen items from the home on New Bethel School Road inside the suspects' truck.

The burglary victim identified his belongings and they were returned to him.

Deputies arrested Eric Paul Stillwell, 38, of Quinton, 29-year-old Natosha Derrick of Jasper and Priscilla Roxanne Mathis of Dora. Deputies said Mathis originally lied about her name.

All three have each been charged with third degree burglary and second degree theft of property for the New Bethel School Road burglary, and authorities say they expect to charge the suspects in the first burglary as well.

The suspects are being held on a $25,000 bond each in the Jefferson County Jail.

The Wyatts are still hopeful they'll get back the things that were stolen.

A Massachusetts gun seller says it’s the latest victim of a federal multiagency task force that is squeezing financing sources for industries deemed “high-risk” by the Obama administration, such as porn stores, drug paraphernalia shops and gun merchants.

Powderhorn Outfitters, which sells firearms, archery gear and fishing equipment in Hyannis, Massachusetts, posted in an online forum this week that its longtime bank — TD Bank — had suddenly dropped its account.

“TD Bank does not support the Second Amendment and has contacted us here at the Powderhorn to say that due to our involvement in firearms sales, we as a business are no longer welcome to have an account at their bank,” the sporting goods store posted on northeastshooters.com, an online forum for shooting enthusiasts in New England states. “They classify us in the same gray area as the local weed shops sprouting up on the Cape.”

The Times reported last week of gun retailers’ complaints that the administration is bypassing Congress and is using increased scrutiny by financial regulators to choke off their lines of credit and squeeze them out of business.

Since 2011, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has directed banks to scrutinize the risks of their merchant customers who use payment processors, such as PayPal, for credit card transactions. In addition, the Justice Department has launched “Operation Choke Point,” a credit card fraud probe ensnaring banks that do business with 24 industries deemed “high-risk” by the FDIC.

“The ‘choke point’ in this operation is the nation’s payments infrastructure, the means by which merchants process nearly $5 trillion in consumer purchases in the U.S. each year,” Jason Oxman, CEO of the Electronic Transactions Association, said in an op-ed for The Hill last month.

“Federal law enforcers are targeting merchant categories like payday lenders, ammunition and tobacco sales and telemarketers — but not merely by pursuing those merchants directly. Rather, Operation Choke Point is flooding payments companies that provide processing service to those industries with subpoenas, civil investigative demands and other burdensome and costly legal demands,” Mr. Oxman wrote.

The sheer evil "brilliance" of Obama’s minions never ceases to amaze me. They are tenacious in their efforts to find ways to circumvent the Constitution and our laws – they simply never give up. There is no better example of this currently than Operation Choke Point. They were caught in 2013 targeting legal industries they did not approve of by bullying banks and other financial institutions into cutting off funds to those whose activities were not ‘acceptable.’ Specifically, the gun industry:

Storefront gun dealers, online dealers and ammunition dealers are on the “high risk” list, along with porn and other salacious products (as if they’re even comparable, the Second Amendment is constitutional right, yet it’s on the DOJ hit list). DOJ argues the program is needed to stop fraud, but that’s a lie. The program is used to target politically inconvenient industries without the permission of Congress.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), at the behest of Barack Obama, has declared that gun stores are “high risk” businesses. “High risk” businesses have been, up until now, a small category of supposedly disreputable businesses, which have included pornographers, sellers of drug paraphernalia, and payday lenders.

The second step in the process is Eric Holder’s Justice Department’s “Operation Choke Point.” And its function is specifically to choke off any credit or credit card processing for businesses (now including gun owners) who fall in the “high risk” category.

The commercial, which focuses on themes of personal protection and fundamental rights, was originally created by Daniel Defense to run in any network TV station at any time. According to NFL guidelines, Daniel Defense’s Super Bowl commercial does not violate NFL policy for two reasons: Daniel Defense has a brick-and-mortar store, where they sell products other than firearms such as apparel. The commercial itself does not mention firearms, ammunition or weaponry. When the Confederate Army of the Shenandoah, under Joseph E. Johnston, and the Confederate Army of the Potomac, under Pierre G. T. Beauregard, met Union forces at the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861, their troops flew an assortment of flags, both state and national. (States' rights was a founding principle of the Confederacy and influenced the attachment many units had to their state flags. Some Virginia and North Carolina soldiers refused to fly anything but their state flags.) Defense of home and family is one of the first and foremost reasons why weapons of almost every sort, certainly including hand-held firearms, were invented in the first place. Almost any gun you can think of performs this primary function well, but some are a little better suited to the job than others.

As a home defense gun, a properly set up AR-15 is easier to shoot accurately and delivers more firepower than a handgun, is more precise than a shotgun, more controllable than a subgun, and is easily configured with lights, lasers and other accessories to give you further advantages over any uninvited guests who may come calling after visiting hours.

There are those who cite a certain “intimidation factor” as an additional benefit of an AR over a handgun, especially an AR equipped with a laser sighting device. Those people watch too much television. As a general rule, anybody who is dumb enough to get caught stumbling around somebody else’s house in the dark can not be counted on to have brains enough to distinguish an AR-15 from an economy-size can of spray-on insect repellent, or to tell the difference between a trembling laser beam and a spinning disco ball. Even if your personal perp is smarter and more mentally alert than that, the fact remains that, while nobody has ever been killed by a well placed shot of intimidation, relying on squishy psychological threats instead of bullets has often had a fatal effect on the naive practitioner.

A laser sight may enhance your ability to aim in low light, as tritium inserts in your iron sights definitely will. Unmagnified red-dot sights can be useful with practice. Unless you are completely suicidal, please remember to detach any long-range scope you might have on your AR before you even think about putting it in a place where somebody might be tempted to use it to defend your home from an invader lurking a few feet away. One accessory you must have on your home-defense AR is a bright white light for target identification. One of these lights mounted on your rail system can disorient and maybe even temporarily blind the bad guy but this is a secondary benefit to the primary one, which is knowing who it is (and who it is not) you’re about to shoot.

One more reminder that seems superfluous but apparently needs to be mentioned is that an AR-15 is a rifle, not a room deodorizer. Wield it from the shoulder, not the hip, use your sights, and fire one well aimed round at a time.

SAFETY ISSUES

Defending your home from robbers, thieves, invaders and assorted nut cases does not mean you have to shoot up your neighborhood. Bullets that whiz through walls almost always create more problems than they solve, and whizzing through walls is one of the things a full-metal-jacket .223 bullet does best. It’s called overpenetration, and there are various ways to alleviate it so your neighbors don’t start shooting back.

A .223 bullet that mushrooms to twice its size and skids to a halt inside the suddenly expanded chest of your uninvited guest is far preferable to one that passes out the back of his MTV T-shirt right through the framed Home-Sweet-Home embroidery hanging on the wall behind him into your grandmother’s TV set. The latter is what you can expect from military-type .223 ammo, the former is the way good hunting hollowpoints and rapidly expanding varmint loads are supposed to behave. If your bullet will transform a prairie dog into a spray of pink mist, it will do much the same to your guest’s heart and lungs without interrupting your grandmother’s favorite soap opera. Another safe bet is pre-fragmented “frangible” bullets, so fragile in construction they’re designed to break up into tiny pieces when they encounter anything harder than a wisdom tooth.

Your home may be your castle, but it’s sure not built like one. Half an inch of drywall with a not-quite 2X4 here and there just isn’t the same as twelve feet of solid stone. Even those old castles didn’t have to withstand anything more penetrating than an occasional arrow, rock or sharp stick.

Besides loading varmint bullets in your .223, another good way to defend your home is with larger-caliber bullets that are, relatively speaking, soft, fat and slow. Your grandmother will be happy to know there are many upper receivers made specifically for your AR that provide just such an ideal defense.

Handgun cartridges loaded with personal defense hollowpoints or frangibles work better in your home AR-15 than they do in your pistol. Uppers are available in 9mm, .40 Auto, .45 ACP and 10mm. Smallbore high-velocity cartridges similar to the .223 - the 6x45mm and 6mm PPC - can be used for home defense with lightweight varmint bullets. Lower-velocity rounds with heavier bullets work even better - 7.62x39 Soviet, 6.8x43 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .300 Fireball/Whisper, and .338 Spectre. Best of all are the big-bore .458 SOCOM and .50 Beowulf, which provide plenty of “knock-down” power and limited penetration when loaded with heavy hollowpoint or softpoint bullets.

Whichever cartridge you choose, you’ll soon see why the short, handy AR-15 carbine, complete with rail-mounted light and perhaps laser and/or red dot sight, is the primary weapon-of-choice used by military units preparing for close quarters battle (CQB) and police SWAT units faced with operating in a hostile home environment. The requirements of these highly trained shooters are quite similar to your own as a home defender operating in cramped space with innocents to consider, and you can learn from their tactics as well as their equipment. The best way to learn is to go to school and practice a lot.
